The Good Dirt

find something good, every day

wrigleyville run

Jody was in town for her once-a-month visit for work.
This time, she got to meet some friends, although the bulk of them split after the first drink. some very good peeps stuck around, though, and we ended the night with dinner with carl, who ended up being such a fun, nice guy to hang out with. it is always such a pleasure to discover good conversationalists.
Here:
1. Kirsten and her friend Michelle, in town from SF.
2. Hans and Julie, who looks like she sees something more interesting in the distance.
3. Me and Jody. I am doing my T-Rex imitation: "I have a big head, and little eyes..." Jody is doing her "i'm gorgeous" impressio, which she does beautifully. Gorgeously. Whatever.
Saw Sylvia last night, too, for a nightcap in my backyard. Funness!

a walk with jim

today has been a very productive day. i have most of the things on my to-do list crossed off, although i'm feeling very non-motivated about two assignments.
oh well. it's only because they're not easy. when did i become such a lazy doodad?
jim is home today! hooray! he has a nasty sunburn with curious white patches. clearly he is not very good at applying the stuff himself. i believe the suitable punishment for such idiocy is to find the most badly burned spot and smack it with a rat's-tail.
jody is comign this evening; i hope there will be more photos! i am a photo nut lately.
in order:
1. sprocket and his two friends and jim's legs
2. i like this one, with the reflections
3. today's post is brought to you by the letter el.
4. here are jim and sprocket waiting for me in front of CVS
5. next halloween, i believe i will dress up as pepper on the couch, with no teeth to hold my tongue in. sigh. so drooly. gotta bust out the wetvac when these dogs have gone. i have never seen so much drool in my life. tell me again, why did i bother to wash the floors on thursday? it's a good thing they're such good company! sprocket likes having them around! i like having them around! more dogs!

close quarters

my next door neighbor is angry. her phone conversation with her boss is peppered with "f*ck" and "sh*t." it makes for horrible background music when trying to write about the origins of Kool-Aid. it's a damned pity i'm not writing about the origins of noise pollution. or etiquette. and it's a damned flying shame that it's a gorgeous, dry day in chicago today, one of those that makes you want to open every single window in your house. i can't, you see, because of the f*cking sh*t argument going on next door.

a visit!

jim and i went to visit alexe! we got to meet little kai an! i've never seen anyone fake-cry with such gusto before. kicking her teeny tiny legs with all the strength she had; making her little chin tremble and wobble like a pro opera soprano hitting all the right notes; arms flailing--and yet, no tears.

here are some photos from the evening.

1. alexe and kai an. lousy photo. didn't want to screw with the flash when the little one was sleeping. or crying. no points for guessing which she did the more of.
2. jim at the corner bakery for dinner afterwards. i like this picture a lot.
3. a pretty little budded up flower at the corner bakery. that place always smells like pee to me. i don't know why i continue to go there. it isn't because of the lousy photos i get to take.
4. pepper, getting comfortable. she must have learned this from sprocket.

photo dump

in order:

1. courtney looks gooood with a jigger of wine at our dinner together last friday. we had peanut butter noodles (which court hates, along with OJ and vanilla ice cream); cucumber and radish slaw, and roasted cauliflower.
2. kirsten also looks good. no points for guessing how i look.
3. this is the photo of feet. k's, sprocket's, and c's.
4. this is a sneaky photo that c took of herself and hound when i was gone. this is eerily like the photo star-struck teenagers take of themselves posing with their favorite rock stars.
didn't think i'd post it, didja, c?
5. we have a crowded house this week. alexe and mike had kai-an (big congratulations!!!), so we have their dogs. the are zuka and pepper, and between them they are missing a great many teeth, which is why our couch is covered in drool marks. sigh.

Now, that's an odd place for a post.

I'm sitting here in the land of tornados, out in a city park with my little tent up. My rain fly is not on right because I can't find the bag that has the rest of my stakes in it, and I didn't being a tarp. I do have my ground cover down, so that's a good thing, but at moment there is a crazy wind blowing outside my tent and a lot of thunder and lightning in the distance. The storm is coming closer--there's a light rain pattering right now--and I'm a wee bit nervous about ending up lying in a pool of wet.
Perhaps more important, or, at least, more pertinent, anyway, I am too watchful to for much but wait this out until it dies down, so I will blog for a little while longer.
Today was my longest ride in some time. We went about 35 miles on mountain bike through a lot of city streets, and then we ended up on a path along a canal, and then we rode through some nasty six-inch high prairie grass through what was supposed to be single track but what was really just crap.
It was fun, though-we had good company, so that was definitely worthwhile. I imagine my ass getting wet. I don't think that's what is happening, but still. It might just.
Ugh. I haven't talked to Jim yet. Maybe I'll try him now.

Dateline

...17 July, Wrigleyville
Girl Brings Camera to Wrong Events; Forced to Show Only Boring Photos.

when questioned about the fact that she clearly did not understand the concept of a camera, she jutted her chin out defensively and said, "i thought i had lost my wallet! it's not like a girl can think about where she put her wallet and remembering to lug along the aerobars she borrowed from her friend that she's meeting tonight while she's wrapping up the housewarming gift she bought for the other friend she's seeing tonight AND remember to bring her camera all at the same time!"
this reporter had no rejoinder, but the girl herself was overheard muttering early the following morning of the aforementioned events. "mrpble flerble frick frack wish i'd brought my camera grumble poo."
the girl, alas, resorted to taking pictures of her own dog and her own feet, crying defiantly as she did so, "folks will want to see what i spent a wad of money on last night, and this is the only tangible proof! witness my new mephisto sandals, bought to ensure that my feet will be comfortable as i pad through the sticky streets of chicago and managua, even if i'm not!" and, "who cares if everyone thinks my only friend is my dog???"

what the krunk!!!

that was really annoying. let's try again.
it looks like iPhoto is only letting me attach two of hte photos. i am really annoyed now, so i'm going to go work on something far less enjoyable, just so i can, you know, further exacerbate the bad mood.
